![]() It is unlikely that Clementine would be diagnosed with a paraphilic disorder by a psychologist as a woman living in the United States. Therefore, due to the way that a woman’s sexuality is viewed in society, no one should be held responsible for Clementine not being assessed or treated for her paraphilic condition.Ģ. Although Clementine is reprimanded for her behavior by her parents and her romantic partners, she never faces consequences for her actions. Since she has been constantly reaffirmed for her behavior throughout her life, and it is sexually arousing for her, she is motivated to continue with her actions because she does not experience overwhelming feelings of duress. When she exposes herself at the swimming pool, her actions seem to be harmless to onlookers since she is in a swimming pool. Later in her life, when Clementine wears short and tight clothing, the people around her find her appealing and bring their attention to her. When she accidentally exposes herself in gym class, all the boys in her class positively affirm her behavior through their actions. This pattern can be seen throughout Clementine’s life. Therefore, in alignment with Elliott (1991), Clementine does not experience overpowering feelings of duress to stop her behavior due to the societal expectations of a woman’s sexuality. Conversely, if a man were to expose himself and act similarly to a woman in this regard, he would be seen as obscene and worthy of an arrest. The root of these societal norms comes about from the idea that when a woman reveals herself, she is commonly praised by men for being attractive and confident. She may be deemed to be sexually promiscuous, but this is not usually seen as distressing and is something that should be addressed psychologically. Due to social structures, when a woman exposes herself by wearing tight clothing, her actions are typically not considered to be disgusting or off-putting by onlookers. I do not believe that anyone can be held responsible for the lack of Clementine’s assessment and treatment for exhibitionism.
